Thoughts:
Here is a link to some points made by our in-house Assembly General Secretary, Terence Corkin, that I found helpful, in our thinking about God, church and our personal understanding of our journey!
I came across an article recently, which I found really interesting, which looks at various understandings of God, and also gives some thoughts on the sometimes militant atheism we see today. The author is apparently an atheist himself, but has some interesting things to say, for instance, about the positive influences religious belief has, and the need perhaps to study what belief in God stems from, and what that means for us today. Some will find his comments on Michael Benedikt's book, God Is the Good We Do thought-provoking. You can find the article here.
Another source of articles that are often of interest to 21st century thinkers, is our own Uniting Church website, The Transit Lounge. Read more here...
Sunday evening (19 April) at Café Church (see below), we looked at the recent Compass program on comparative religions and the similarities between many of the Jesus stories, and those in Buddhist, Mithras, Hindu, and Egyptian literature, among others. There were some really good discussions around the ideas raised in the program. It's sadly not available on the ABC website, but other programs are - you can find more information on their site.
The format for the Sunday (Café Church) evening gathering is very participative, with time (usually) for modern worship music, plenty of discussion, NO PREACHING!!!, and coffee and something light to eat. Topics have ranged from questions about what makes life worth living, to moments of awareness of spirituality, to helpful images of God, to ... Well, basically discussions that are relevant, hopefully, and where the given is that we are looking for answers together, not simplistically prescribing for others.
Anyway, if it sounds like this might be you, and you're roughly between 2 and 92 (any age, actually), know you'll be welcome every Sunday at 7pm!
Friends??? Sydney is one of THE most wonderful cities in the world - but that makes it a popular destination. And so there are plenty of new families in our suburbs. And when you've moved, it can sometimes be quite a challenge to make new friends. Here's an article you might find helpful if you are wanting to meet new friends. (And of course, many church communities are great places to meet people also! We are fairly close to Revesby railway station if that makes us accessible to you.)
